Academic Year 2023-24
Public Talks in Easter 2024
UCCGS co-hosted a public lecture with the Faculty of Education and the Knowledge, Power Politics Research Group for Bonnie Honig, Nancy Duke Lewis Professor of Modern Culture and Media (MCM) and Political Science at Brown University on Thursday 26 September 2024 in the Divinity School Main Lecture Theatre, St John's College, Cambridge. Professor Honig's lecture noted resonances between Hannah Arendt’s account of action as “action that appears in words” (The Human Condition, 1958) and J.L. Austin’s account of performativity, where “the issuing of an utterance is the performing of an action” (How to Do Things with Words, 1955/62). Despite torrential rain, the lecture was well-attended and it was followed by a Q&A and a Drinks Reception, to coincide with a two-day conference to mark the launch of the Hannah Arendt Consortium (HAC) on Crises and Political Transformation. Our sincere thanks to all contributors.
UCCGS was delighted to co-host this year's University of Cambridge Biennial International Lecture on Globalisation, Sustainability and the Power of Ideas with WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on World Trade, Development and Sustainability on Friday 19 July 2024. The online event offered the chance to understand how world institutions are evolving to address our world’s challenges, including obstacles and opportunities for the World Trade Organization in urgent socio-economic transformation towards sustainability, and it provided a unique opportunity to share insights on our ever-changing world.
