Dr Elsa Bengtsson Meuller (she/they) is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Goldsmiths, on the HORIZON-funded project You-DARE (Youth Debunking the Gendered Arguments of Far-Right Extremism). Their research is informed by feminist theory and focuses on emerging and online technologies, violence, and international politics. Elsa completed their PhD in 2025 at Goldsmiths, University of London. Elsa is also a Fellow at the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism; and an Associate Editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies.
Online violence is often deprioritised compared to offline ‘physical’ violence. However, ‘online’ and ‘offline’ violence are frequently interconnected, leading us to question: where is the boundary between them? Elsa challenges this boundary by exploring the misogynist incel community, showing how some of their violence is framed as merely existing ‘online’, which in turn diminishes the scale and impact of misogyny. Elsa conceptualises ‘online violence’ as blurred violence – violence that we can observe but for which no one is taking responsibility.
The UCCGS Gender Research Seminars offer academics and graduate students an opportunity to present their work-in-progress to a multi-disciplinary audience interested in gender, in a friendly and informal atmosphere. Seminars are held on specified days during Michaelmas and Lent and everyone is welcome to attend.
